Doctor Man and I spent the day yesterday conducting an intricate scientific experiment on Portuguese egg tarts [proper name: pasteis de nata]. Dr. Man, who developed an affinity for the small yellow tarts during her recent excursion through coastal Portugal, proposed the challenge of trying to find the "best" tarts in Toronto. We began research immediately. Travelling on foot, we conducted a thorough exploration of all Portuguese bakeries and grocery stores along Dundas Street (the centre of Toronto's ethnic enclove known as Little Portugal). Specimans were colletecd from each store, carefully labelled with the sample site's name and marked with the price paid for product. In total, 6 samples were collected.
Testing was conducted at Dr. Man's residence. The tarts were first placed on trays, then halved and quartered. The exterior and interior surfaces of the tart were thoroughly examined, with careful notation of the crust's flakiness and crispness, and the custard's colour, texture, and sweetness. Photographic records document the entire experiment.
Of the six tarts that were sampled, two tarts were selected as being "among the best." However as the sample size was limited to a small section of Little Portugal, many more sites need to be visited, and more samples tested before the objective is conclusively reached. The quest for the best Portuguese egg tart in Toronto continues...
